651ppi JDI Display = 2x the Resolution of Apple’s Retina Display

A War of Superlatives

Less than two weeks ago Gizmodo.com said LG's Full HD phone display had an "absolutely insane ", "colossal, eye-bleeding pixel density" of 440ppi (Pixels Per Inch), and called it the "new high-resolution beast in town". That LG display uses AH-IPS (Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching). LG's 440ppi on a 5-inch, full HD, LCD panel, is about 35-percent more pixels than the new Apple iPhone 4 and 4S models' so-called 'retina display'.

That new LG display will not even be available to consumers until the second half of 2012, but they've already taken a direct hit, a major broadside.

Pixel-to-Pixel Combat

That was then, and this is now. Less than two weeks later the new beast in town has aged markedly, before even coming to market.
The new kid in town is Japan Display Inc.'s (JDI) 651ppi, LCD, smartphone display. That is almost precisely twice the PPI count of Apple's iPhone 4 and 4S models, with a format of 1,280 x 800 pixels (WXGA), on a screen size of only 2.3-inches. (Kuh-pow, take that you beast! I've always wanted to say that; and I almost never use exclamation points!)

Japan Display Inc. says their 651ppi display is "comparable to film-based photographs", "approaching typographic quality levels", and is able to display 16.7-million colors. JDI's technology uses polysilicon TFTs in a low temperature manufacturing process.

JDI really is the new kid in town, and was established by integrating Hitachi Displays, Toshiba Mobile Display, and Sony Mobile Display on 'April Fools Day', 2012. One suspects LG may be the one feeling a bit foolish right about now.
