If Samsung actually does produce the P-10 tablet now anticipated world-wide by the tech community, the result could be a such a step up in quality and performance that consumers could potentially see the dreamiest tablet ever made; while Apple Inc. could awaken from the dream-world of no real competition, and start a whole new day in a world where some products are better than Apple's tablets, and are recognized as such.
"What's it all about, Alfie?"
It's really not about this one specific device or its individual parts, which are more a matter of speculation right now, with only a few details released as part of a court case in progress. What it is about is how a new tablet that appears to be near the end of the planning stage and possibly approaching production, could affect the mobile computing ecosystem.Information concerning what appears to be a new high-end Samsung tablet, codenamed the P10, came to light in proceedings in an Apple versus Samsung court proceeding. That information shows an almost perfect convergence of a new, best-in-class, very high-performance SoC (System-on-Chip) combined with a high pixel density 11.8-inch WQXGA, 2,560 x 1,600 pixel display. That could mean a tablet is on the way to production that would be a very suitable rival to Apple's 9.7-inch iPad which has a QXGA, 2,048 x 1,536 pixel display.
The Samsung tablet's 256 PPI (Pixels Per Inch) would be 97% of the pixel density of Apple's so-called "retina" display at 264 PPI, and perceptually there would be no difference in PPI quality. The larger screen on the Samsung, however, delivers 30% more pixels; 4,096,000 total pixels versus 3,145,728 for the new Apple iPad. The Samsung P10's display screen will deliver more on-screen content and probably a perception of better visual quality. Apple may have just been beaten at its own display game. Some observers think it will have LTE connectivity, while others say there is no indication of that.
Details in released documents are sketchy, but it does appear that the P10 would utilize the Samsung Exynos 5 Dual SoC chipset incorporating 3D graphics, 1,080p, 60fps video hardware, an Image Signal Processor, and USB 3.0 and SATA 3, and a Cortex-A15 dual core, with each core running at 1.7GHz.Samsung says the new SoC will be almost twice as fast as the current A9, and reports they have integrated the recently released Mali-T604 quad-core GPU into the Exynos 5 Dual chipset. The Mali-T604 is said to offer a 5x jump in graphics performance over the previous generation Mali GPU.
The most important thing about the chipset is not the specifics of the chipset itself, but rather the fact that Samsung manufactures processors for Apple's iPad.
Several in the industry seem to think it is possible Samsung has a chance of making a game-changer if the execution is right. Much will depend on the OS (operating system) Samsung chooses. If the choice is Windows 8 RT, all bets are off regarding sales volume. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, however has been described on various devices as "smooth as butter" as it handles video.
A Tip of the Hat
"Hats off" to SlashGear.com for their observation that: Samsung "might finally have got the message that functionality in context is just as important, if not more so, than how well-packed your spec-sheet is. Samsung’s big challenge, then, is not to get sidetracked by the pure specifications of its new slate behemoth. The company needs to tell us why we need tech that previously it might simply have hoped to hypnotize us with."
Forbes.com commented: "There is no doubt that Samsung will do a better job than Apple at the electronics hardware."
Assessment
Samsung's upcoming P10 tablet, or whatever its nomenclature turns out to be, appears to have all the earmarks of a winner. It's pixel density of 256 PPI on a screen of that size will be absolutely gorgeous, and a deal closer for doubters once they lay eyes on it. The Exynos 5 Dual chipset with an integrated quad-core GPU will likely blow the market away with its best-in-class performance and ultra-smooth video."Many a Slip Between the Cup & the Lip"
Finally, the significant remaining variables are pricing, LTE inclusion, the OS, and the esthetics and build-quality. The P10 may, or may not, sell reasonably well with Windows 8 RT, but Android 4.1 Jelly Bean would be the better choice, and could push unit sales into stellar territory. It seems quite possible that Samsung just might get the quality and esthetics right. With a current model number of GT-P8110, if the P10 does make it to market with whatever name it may be assigned, the Samsung P10 tablet could turn out to be an Apple corer device.
