$60 Matrix One Android ICS 7-Inch Tablet – Make ’em cheap & stack ’em deep

In a previous article on Semiconductor Technology this journalist quoted Intel's Chief Operating Officer as saying the company's new chip fabrication equipment would provide 30% to 40% reductions in the cost of CPU chips, which in turn would greatly reduce prices on tablets, smartphones, and laptops. A more striking prediction was made by Nomura Group's global technology specialist, Richard Windsor, who said: "We're talking about $50 tablets".

It will be several years before Intel has that new equipment fully installed, but as mentioned in that article: The future seems to be arriving a bit ahead of schedule.

Initially the California based company, Direct Merchandise Marketing (DMM) in partnership with its affiliate Direct Media Marketing, was targeting a $120 price-point for the Matrix One Android 4.0 ICS 7-inch tablet, but is currently offering it on their website for $60.

Quoting the company's website DMM says their high-volume business model solution is: "A trading company exclusively focused on computer tablet distribution at a competitive price", and "Large volume contracts with distributors and retailers in the US and worldwide", in addition to "Direct sales to consumers in less developed regions .... (Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America)."

Translation: DMM's strategy appears to be; make 'em cheap and stack 'em deep.

The DMM effort at first brings to mind the Datawind $35 Aakash 2 & UbiSlate tablets, but appears to be on far more solid ground with a remarkably competitive product. Unlike Datawind, DMM seems to have the ability to actually deliver their product in a timely manner.
