Dell Facilitates BYOD Via KACE K3000 Management Appliance, Not a Flying Toaster

flying_toastersBYOD (Bring Your Own Device) and Convergence are both such powerful IT and PC trends that a recent article by this journalist on the Faces of Convergence included a sub-head stating "Dell Marries Convergence & BYOD".
Matrimony has its advantages, but as with those between people, marriages of trends, devices, or processes will sometimes give birth to unintended consequences. Dozens of brands and models of mobile devices, including tablets, smartphones, and hybrid or convertible laptop-tablets have become double-edged swords, as employees shoehorn them into the workplace; bringing additional utility, mobility, and productivity, as well as a veritable ensemble of security and management issues for corporate IT departments.

The answer may be to "marry" all such employee devices into IT departments' infrastructures and Master Data Management Systems (MDMs) by utilizing dedicated, specialized devices such as the Dell KACE K3000 Mobile Management Appliance. If the word appliance in the context of PCs reminds the reader of the Flying Toasters screen-saver of a not so distant yesteryear, that's understandable as we move on to an appliance that is not your father's toaster, or screen-saver as the case may be.

The KACE K3000 Mobile Management Appliance is designed to reign in the unruly progeny of problems born of the multi-partner marriages between huge numbers of consumer mobile devices and enterprise IT departments. In a written statement on a product page Dell said: "The key challenge with mobile devices is that they are at a higher risk of getting into the wrong hands, making the security of sensitive corporate data paramount. The proliferation of device types and operating systems only increases the complexity for IT while [sic] also increases the risk of security attacks."

dell-kace-k3000Research vice president, Philip Redman, at  research firm Gartner Inc. said: "....by implementing a structured support system with varied support levels, IT organizations can shield business information and enforce policies about data movement between the device and the corporate network, while enabling users to adopt the device they deem most appropriate. Organizations will find it hard to achieve an efficient mobile-support system if all platforms are not managed the same way under enterprise requirements."

Essentially that's exactly what the Dell appliance does according to Rob Meinhardt, general manager for Dell KACE who said: "With the Dell KACE K3000 Mobile Management Appliance, our customers will have a well-integrated and easy to use system for managing and securing all types of devices, operating systems and endpoints in their IT environment."

Substantial advantages of the Dell KACE K3000 for IT departments include integration that allows all endpoints, including mobile devices, PCs, and servers to be accessed, viewed, and managed from a single console.
