Dell Cuts a Cord: World’s 1st & Fastest WiGig Wireless Ultrabook Docking Station

Providing data transfer speeds up to ten times faster than the fastest Wi-Fi networks, Dell Inc. is bringing the world's fastest and first WiGig laptop dock to market, the Dell Wireless Dock D5000, coupled with the only ultrabook currently equipped to use it, the Latitude 6430u ultrabook. That dock is based on the latest multi-gigabit tri-band 802.11ad wireless standard, also known as WiGig.

That new WiGig standard is enabled by the first 60-GHz multi-gigabit tri-band wireless chipsets developed by Wilocity in cooperation with Qualcomm Atheros, and currently provides speeds of up to 4.6 gigabits per second. Because the chips are tri-band they do support the ability to revert to the previous 5-GHz and 2.4-GHz transmission standards. That's important because 60-GHz transmissions are short-range and have difficulty penetrating walls.

The Dell Wireless Dock D5000 provides three USB 3.0 ports, and supports up to two external displays with both HDMI and DisplayPort, as well as a front audio in / out port for voice over IP at speeds as fast as 4.6 gigabits per second.

IT managers may be particularly interested in the fact that data is encrypted with strong authentication protocols, and deployment is easy through a pairing button that connects to Dell Connection Manager software.

The Qualcomm Atheros vice president and general manager of computing Vivek Gupta said: “Our tri-band solution provides reliable wireless connectivity and sets the stage to enable a broad range of applications, such as data syncing and video streaming, all while maintaining wireless docking capabilities.” Dell vice president Kirk Schell said: “We are proud to introduce the Dell Wireless Dock, the industry’s first and only WiGig dock that is the result of a five-year-long leadership effort. WiGig represents a new era in wireless connectivity and a shift in the way enterprises and consumers will experience connectivity and interact with their devices in the future."
