Moov Is A Sleek Fitness Tracker With A Personal Trainer Personality

MoovWearable fitness trackers today are usually one of the two: bulky or nerdy in appearance, or slim and sleek, but with limited utility. It would be nice to have a choice between a design you would want to wear, and something that provides more useful data than just counting your steps. Don’t doubt smartbands are becoming sleeker, even a new version of the Galaxy Gear Fit was recently announced at the Mobile World Congress this month. But what if what you wore on your wrist acted as a personal trainer; more than something to simply keep you “motivated”? The team behind Moov is a partnership originating among a former Apple engineer, and sensor research veterans at Microsoft.

moov2They wanted Moov to be a game changing fitness tracker; one that not only provides information while you're exercising, one that quantifies it, and tells you how to improve through audio and visual instruction as-you-go. Moov launched it’s crowdfunding campaign today, with hopes of raising $40,000 to start. Yet, the idea began over seven years ago. One partner, Meng Li, knew that reporting footsteps wasn’t enough during her daily runs. She was in pain. After suffering from runner’s knee and realizing “I didn't know how I run”, she says, “we started building around that”. Most fitness trackers will monitor how much you move, and some may even have the capability to tell you’re not moving enough. That isn’t enough, not if you are going for overall fitness enhancement. The focus should be surrounded around quality of movement, and ways to improve proper form. Why have something to encourage you to keep going that doesn’t reassure how you're doing?

Moov`1The device comes waterproof, with 5 sports included as a start (swimming, running, etc), 3D motion sensing, and of course real-time interactive fitness coaching. Monitoring form is what truly separates Moov from other fitness trackers. From preventing running injuries by tracking your cadence, hitting a perfect drive with swing analysis, or swimming faster by analyzing your strokes, Moov provides a constant “feedback loop”. Of course this vocal encouragement isn’t a necessity; some days you may want to simply have music on in the background during a workout. Each activity Moov supports has a separate app, for iOS with Android coming soon. Moov is merely the size of a silver dollar, can be worn on your wrist, ankle, or arm (depending on the exercise), comes in black or white, works for 8-10 hours of active use, and is currently retailing for only $59 during it’s pre-order campaign.
