OM Audio is from Oakland, California, and designs audio accessories, such as the Inearpeace earphones and Mantra speakers. The company just announced the OM/One, a novel approach on how fun and cool speakers can be. The system consists of a base and a round speaker that uses magnetic levitation to float an inch above its base, spinning gently. When detached, the hovering orb can be used as a portable speaker with the help of an AC adapter. An internal sensor can wirelessly connect OM/One to all major smartphones, tablets, and computers. Once linked to a device, it can take calls via built-in microphone, as well as turn music on and off.
Besides the obvious reason of it being visually appealing, why a levitating speaker? David DeVillez, co founder and CEO of OM Audio says, “The fact that it levitates gives us an angle on some audio techniques that make the speaker a lot better”. OM/One contains a 3-watt root mean square (RMS) amplifier inside of it, and can produce 100dBs. Competitive products, such as Jawbone, use 9 to 10 watts to get that same output. A levitating speaker can create more audio output with less amplifier power because it can hear every high and low with no external distortion. OM/One just launched its crowdfunding campaign on Tuesday to put the speaker into production. Available in black, white, or disco ball, OM/One can be pre-ordered for $179, with delivery in December 2014.
