Samsung’s Galaxy Note Edge Sports One Curved-Edge Screen

SamsungNoteEdgeDuring the annual IFA tech conference held in Berlin, Samsung launched four new products Wednesday. These include the new Galaxy Note 4, the Galaxy Gear S smartwatch, the Gear VR virtual reality headset, and the Note Edge smartphone. Some say such an “unpacking” of multiple products marks an uncertain moment for Samsung, which is facing tremendous pressure and stiffer competition in bigger-screened phones; as well as low-cost handset vendors, such as Xiaomi and Huawei. Additionally, Apple remains Samsung's highest competitor when it comes to pricey, high-end smartphones. Perhaps this is Samsung's avant garde way of showing it is still a leader in the gigantic mobile biz. Of all four new smart devices, the brand new Note Edge smartphone, which brandishes a thin, curved screen that cascades along the right side, is what everyone is paying attention to right now.

SamsungNoteEdge2This smartphone is unlike anything we have ever seen before. Sure, we've seen curved screens before. We've also heard rumors of Samsung flirting with curved technology since CES 2013. I'm not sure anyone expected this. Rather than a curved display across the device, only the right side is extended, sporting a thin strip populated with icons and widgets. If you're wondering about left-handed folks, the entire display flips upside-down to accommodate. Everything else is said to be nearly identical to the Galaxy Note 4, including a 5.6-inch Quad HD display (2,560 x 1440) for the main screen, a new speedier processor, better cameras, and software.

SamsungNoteEdge1Samsung's new product is surely an original design statement. The company hopes to gain ground in the oversized smartphone market, an area of expertise and trend-setting for Samsung. Its efforts come at a time when other rival companies, like Apple, are expected to launch their own bigger-screen phones. Who knows, maybe this is one way to one-up the others without being too flashy!
