Woah – SanDisk Has a New 512GB SD Card

SanDisk512GbSanDisk Corporation is known for unveiling its 512MB memory card back in 2003. Thanks to it, millions of digital cameras and smartphones could hold more data. Now the company announced its newest memory card at the IBC 2014 convention in Amsterdam. Its called the SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC UHS-1, and it can hold 512GB, or half a terabyte of data! Unlike other SD cards out there that sell like hot cakes for cheap, the 512GB costs a lot. Like, a lot, a lot. But for $799.99, you can hold more data on one card that ever before.

SanDisk512Gb2Although this probably costs more than your best camera, the company clams the new Extreme Pro SD card is for filmmakers, videographers, and photographers out there who shoot 4K Ultra High Definition (HD) video, Full HD video, as well as high-speed burst mode (TheNextWeb). Dinesh Bahal, SanDisk's VP of product marketing says such an advancement is partly due to the latest technologies, such as 4K Ultra HD, that “push us to develop new storage solutions capable of handling massive file sizes”. Because shooting just one minute of 4K video takes up around 5GB of space, storage like this is long-awaited for those using cutting-edge 4K cameras.

SanDisk512Gb1The card delivers write speeds up to 90 MB/S, and transfer speeds of 95 MB/S. The SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC UHS-1 received harsh condition tests, and if winning these tests were an option, this card got an A+. While being waterproof, humidity-resistant, shock-resistant, and impermeable to X-rays, it also displayed extreme resistance to cold and heat.

Although this seems like a perfect (but expensive) solution for photographers, one question remains. Sometimes storing all your device's data on one card can be a little scary. One, having multiple cards for multiple projects brings in both convenience and organization; and two, everything on one card means if you lose it, you lose it all. So, whether you're ready for half a terabyte of occupancy is up to you. If you desire a little less space or price, 256GB and 128GB alternatives are also available.
