Cellulon Epic: The Virtual Keyboard

CellulonEpicKeyboardAs we move farther away from the bulky set-ups of our home PCs and ever into the world of smaller, thinner, lighter and more portable, a few “niceties” get lost in the mix. One of the things that I miss most when trying to work on the go is the ease of my keyboard. Don’t get me wrong, I love the portability and light traveling weights that my smartphone and tablet afford me, but typing on them is a hassle. Bluetooth-enabled portable keyboards can remedy this, but for the most part are bulky and, frankly, unwelcome added weight to an already heavy traveling workstation. I recently came across an ingenious little device called the Cellulon EPIC Virtual Keyboard that was the answer to my keyboard ails.

CellulonEpicKeyboard1The EPIC Virtual projection keyboard uses infrared light to project a virtual keyboard onto any flat opaque surface. When your fingers pass through the key’s projected area, the sensor detects the infrared light reflecting off of it, and computes it as a keystroke. The EPIC is Bluetooth-enabled and surprising tiny at only 70 x 35 x 20 mm, making it easy to slip into your pants pocket or that last little bit of free space in your tablet’s carrying case. Plus, it’s surprisingly easy to use – simply turn the projection device on and it will automatically enable its Bluetooth signal as well. In addition to its keyboard functions, the EPIC doubles as a virtual multi-touch mouse. As for the functionality of the keyboard itself, Cellulon estimates it can handle typing speed of up to 70 words per minute.

CellulonEpicKeyboard2The EPIC is compatible with all major mobile and desktop operating systems, including iOS, Android, Windows and Mac OS X. The built-in battery provides at least 2 hours of operating time which, as you probably would have guessed, is charged through a microUSB port. The price recently dropped just in time for Christmas, ringing this sweet little gadget in at just under $100 via ThinkGeek or BestBuy.
