I had saved a small sum of money to purchase some computer parts and began selling them on eBay. After a few months I realized that people needed a place to go for Dell parts so I began building our website. If you've ever had a Roomba, or simply seen one, iRobot is the company behind the cute robotic vacuum that cleaned your house so you could put your feet up (and the YouTube video of a cat dressed like a shark while riding one). The company, is in fact, a leader in global robotics. Back in 2007, iRobot released a hackable version of the 400-series Roomba called Create. Instead of using it as a vacuum, Create was a programmable robot for the purpose of research. Despite good intention, the idea didn't really go anywhere, and that is why iRobot is releasing Create 2, a new version of the robotic project for tech students, educators and DIY developers.
The Create 2 robots are suction-less versions of a Roomba base. It still maneuvers, has the same design, and charging elements. Basically, the company re-manufactured old Roomba 600 series hardware, “bringing the full collection of LEDS and sensors from said platform to your fingertips” (Slash Gear). Anyone interested, from student to advanced DIY enthusiast, are able to program sounds, robotic behaviors and movements.
For $199, you can receive the Create 2 platform and get started with iRobot's detailed instruction manuals, such as a faceplate drilling template, academic projects, as well as 3D printable files for building new parts for the robot. According to Engadget, there are clearly marked spaces on the Roomba for adding cameras, arms and other hardware.
