Dell Launches Their Latitude Rugged Extreme Notebooks in India

Lat12-14Rugged2Dell, the "world’s fastest-growing IT company", launched two new ruggedized devices this week to the Indian market. The Latitude 14 Rugged Extreme notebook and Latitude 12 Rugged Extreme convertible notebooks are targeted at customers in fields such as military service, manufacturing, construction and heavy industries that require sturdy machines for ruggedized work environments.

Lat12-14Rugged1According to Dell, the Rugged Extreme is designed to “survive the toughest conditions imaginable”. To ensure they achieved near-impenetrability, the notebook was put through more than 35 intense temperature, shock, radiation, rain, sand and dust, freezing and water ingress tests and passed them all to meet military standard (MIL-STD) requirements. To paint a better picture of this technological tank, it has a magnesium alloy chassis and the ability to shrug off water, sand and dust. The ports are concealed by plastic latches and insulated with foam, protecting it from any and all elements, and every nook and cranny in the notebook has been reinforced with a dual-knife edge design and compression gaskets to stop liquids, dust and sand from getting inside. It also boasts an IP-65 certification, which means it is nearly impenetrable when it comes to dust and water jets.

Lat12-14Rugged3As you would expect from Dell, the machines’ performance was in no way sacrificed for the sake of durability. Both the Latitude 12 and the Latitude 14 come with your choice of fourth-generation Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 dual-core processors, Intel HD Graphics, two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, two RS-232 Serial ports, two Ethernet ports, VGA and HDMI ports and a pogo-pin docking connector. Additional options include a DVD+/-RW as well as an integrated FHD 1080-pixel webcam (concealed behind a privacy shutter above the screen). Both models still manage to have excellent screens with Direct-View outdoor-readable display technology, which is designed to be functional in the brightest of conditions by reducing reflections and protecting contrast. The resistive multi-touch display can be used even with gloves on, or there is always the included stylus which is conveniently connected to the body of the notebook so you never have to worry about losing it. The Latitude 12 comes with a 4-cell lithium-ion battery and 11.6-inch HD display while the Latitude 14 uses a 6-cell or 9-cell lithium-ion battery, has a 14-inch HD display and comes with ExpressCharge, which promises to charge the device to at least 80 percent capacity within an hour.

Lat12-14RuggedSince the Rugged Extreme line is obviously meant to be used in public outdoor situations, security was a major focus for Dell. The notebooks come standard with two smart card readers (one contactless) as well as an optional fingerprint scanner. Dell’s security service allows you to encrypt all your data across external media and in the cloud and offers real-time protection against malware attacks. The Latitude 14 comes with Trusted Platform Module (TPM) and Dell Control Vault which protects and secures passwords, biometric templates and security codes from malware.

The only downside to the indestructible line of notebooks so far seems to be the weight – with all that hardware, the Latitude 14 Rugged Extreme weighs in at a whopping 8.6 pounds. Luckily Dell thought of that too, and has attached convenient carrying handles to all of the notebooks in the Rugged Extreme line.
