Asus ZenWatch? The most attractive piece from Android Wear so far? That's how it's being described, as it gets ready for its very first UK release in December. Not too surprising, considering Taiwan-based Asus isn't much of a mobile or wearable icon. The Nexus 7 really is the only household name that comes to mind when we think of the brand. As far as wearables, Android Wear's Moto 360 wasn't too bad looking for a smartwatch, but still seemed a little beefy on most people's wrists. The desirable thing about the Asus ZenWatch is its likeness to a nice designer watch. Somehow the company really got the size right.

Its design ain't bad either, with a stainless steel body in a 51 x 39.9 mm case. It has smooth rounded corners, and a slightly curved 1.63 inch, 320 X 320 AMOLED display, protected in Gorilla Glass 3 (Gizmag). Inside, it has a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 and 512 MB RAM, which is what you'll find in all other watches by the brand (it's all they ever need). Asus also added in a bonus 4GB of flash storage for those of you who don't want to lug around your smartwatch to have that extra library of songs with you.

The watch is also waterproof to an extent. It will survive some rain or splashing, but not at the bottom of a pool. Using Android Wear's operating system, the smartwatch works with most Android phones, and can double as a fitness tracker. Unlike most smartwaches, which have a heart rate sensor on the inside bezel to touch your wrist, the ZenWatch put its sensor on the front bezel. Placing two fingers on the watch face sounds pleasant compared to the sometimes necessary act of tightening your smartwatch to make sure it touches the inside of your wrist.

The ZenWatch manager companion app doesn't do anything too fancy, but does help you find your watch if you lose it, contains a flashlight, compass, and a variety of personalized settings for receiving alerts and phone calls on your wrist. Asus Wellness, its fitness-tracking app, lets you log exercise, encourages you to move more, and can of course, track your heart rate for exercise or relaxation. Getting a whole bunch done in one day may drain the battery, which is one downfall reviewers found.

Would you chalk up $200 for a super attractive smartwatch that also lives up to the performance of most rivals? That's what Asus is hoping, and, believe it or not, the ZenWatch happens to be one of the cheapest devices put out by Android Wear. It is most likely to appeal to those who wear business or business causal attire, but anyone who finds the physicality of smarwatches to be a nuisance could find the ZenWatch beautiful.
