Control from Your Smartphone with D-Link’s Wi-Fi Smart Plug

DlinkSmartPlugD-Link, Taiwanese Wi-Fi product manufacturer, decided to provide us with a reasonably-cost, substantial Smart Plug for controlling Z-Wave (low-power RF) home sensors and Wi-Fi devices. In actuality, it is rather unintelligent in the way it works, because all it has to do is be plugged into an AC outlet for your smartphone to take control of devices around the home, including D-Link devices and third-party items. Home automation seems easier with D-Link than some of the smart hubs out there.

DlinkSmartPlug1This Wi-Fi motion sensor is a simple little thing. Only measuring 25 x 55 mm, it will blend in with your wall (assuming you don't paint your walls black), and do a lot of work just by sitting there. After linking up your devices to the D-Link Smart Plug by scanning their QR codes into your smartphone, you can control each device using typical pop-up notifications. Then, you're ready to link up alarms, lights, and locks for motion detection, turning lights on and off on a schedule, or arming your home.

DlinkSmartPlug2The hub connects using either Android or iOS, has just one button for manual control of the outlet, as well as a Wi-Fi Protected Setup button to link up to your router (Tech Hive). Apparently, the time between launching the D-Link app and having it connect your device to the Smart Plug is only about 15 seconds.

In just weeks, it's possible that CES will be blowing our minds with countless smart home devices such as this. Hopefully, the company will demonstrate the ease of use its Smart Plug has to offer, and its low-cost manner of adding a few extra levels of security, connection, and smartness to your home. Speaking of low-cost, that's all we know for now as far as pricing goes. All in due time, friends.
