After Two Years, the Ubi Smart Hub Is out of Beta Testing

UbiSmartHubUbi wants to one-up other similar smart hubs that connect devices around the home by being voice-operated. Similar to the Smart Plug from D-Link, Ubi simply plugs into an AC outlet. However, the added bonus of using speech-recognition technology makes for an easier-to-command option. Add that to its various sensors and Internet-connected brain, and you've got an all around smart home control system. It also doesn't rely on your smartphone, like most others do.

Ubi, an intercom-looking box measuring 4.75 x 4.75 inches and 1.5 inches thick, plugs into an outlet and connects to your Wi-Fi (Tech Hive). An accompanying smartphone app, although not needed to operate Ubi, also has built-in voice control if you're out of the home or away from the unit. Either way, you can control and give commands to your smart thermostat, blinds, door locks, and lightbulbs by linking up with them over Wi-Fi. This includes third-party home devices, such as the Nest Thermostat, as well as other gadgets in the SmartThings portfolio. It even works with a list of If This Then That (IFTTT) recipes, which can be found on the IFTTT site.

UbiSmartHub1You just switch Ubi on, and start by saying the phrase “Ok, Ubi”, similar to the way you would say “Ok, Google” on your Android device (its internal speaker and microphone work a lot like that of an intercom). Speaking of that particular Internet giant, Ubi uses Google's speech-to-text software and web search to answer any questions you ask it. It is also linked up with SoundCloud and Grooveshark to play music simply by requesting a song.

Believe it or not, Ubi has been in beta testing for over two years, after having a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign in 2012 that helped raise funds to get the device progressing. Its manufacturer, UCIC, now calls it the “Voice of the Internet”, and has raised over $1 million ($230,00 through Kickstarter) to start shipping its $299 Ubi. Actually, that $299 price is so two years ago. UCIC has officially lowered Ubi's price tag to just $199 (PC World).
