VAIO Hasn’t Gone Anywhere, Welcome the Z and Z Canvas Hybrids

VaioZLaptopEarly last year, due to a drop in demand, Sony gave up on its VAIO PC business, and sold its entire division to Japan Industrial Partners (JIP). That didn't stop the Tokyo-based computer manufacturer from manifesting a couple of VAIO prototypes that, after shown off last year, were thought to be left in the cold. Both are flagship models that might ring a bell. Dubbed the VAIO Z and VAIO Z Canvas, where the “Z” is now rumored to signify “zero”, or a new chance for VAIO, both models live up to a reputable design.

VaioZLaptop1Starting at $1,600, they better. Both convertible laptops, the VAIO Z (two configurations) has a 13.3-inch, 2560 x 1440 display, weighs just 1.34 kg and is 16.8mm thick. It runs on an unspecified 5th gen Core i7 or i5 processor (Intel has been rumored), supports 8 to 16 GB of RAM, and boasts over 15 hours of battery life. The VAIO Z Canvas, comparable to the Microsoft Surface Pro, is a full tablet with a detachable wireless keyboard and kickstand. It measures 12.1 inches, has a 2560 x 1704 resolution, runs on an unspecified Core i7 CPU, and supports 16 GB of RAM. Both also come with an active digitizer and stylus (Slash Gear).

VaioZLaptop2In order to bring the VAIO Z flagship series up-to-date, they both sport a “muliflip” mode, where they can change between tablet-mode, laptop-mode, or laptop-mode with the screen facing in the opposite direction on its hinge. The VAIO Z is said to boast those 15 hours of battery life (without compromising form) thanks to a recomposed battery that was engineered with reduced layers for improved capacity (Engadget). If this is true, this would make it the longest running laptop VAIO made, ever. The VAIO Z Canvas is touted as a creative option. Along with the ability to detach its keyboard and use its kickstand, it has a slightly better display and color reproduction.

It's obvious that this VAIO flagship is up and coming with the times. JIP aims on offering more than your standard, flip-open laptops, but rather a couple of multi-functional hybrids with sleek design. The VAIO Z is available now, but for some reason we have to wait for the VAIO Z Canvas until May this year.
