Get Ready for Valve to Announce Its SteamVR Device

ValveStreamVr1To no surprise at all, the next in line for developing its very own virtual reality device had to be software giant Valve, whose Steam online gaming platform is consistently boasting with success. All should be revealed next week at the annual Game Developer Conference, but there's plenty to be excited about already. Dubbed SteamVR, this isn't Valve's first rodeo. Last year, the company released its Dota 2 prototype, which had an amazing resolution count and motion tracking (Toms Guide). If SteamVR ends up sporting similar motion tracking capabilities, it could really shine a light on a type of hardware already head-to-head with competition; ahem, the Oculus Rift and even the new OSVR (open-source virtual reality) system from Razor.

The VR market is a big one. It's like a playground for gaming giants. Details have not been leaked yet, but Valve is going to have to fill some very big expectations, especially when it comes to content. Luckily, we do know that Valve is currently looking for VR content creators for its device (Wired). A note on the Steam website announces the upcoming SteamVR, and invites publishers and developers to sign up for a behind-closed-doors demonstration of the prototype.

ValveStreamVrAlso expect to see some final demos of Valve's Steam Machines, custom-built PCs for running Steam wherever you want, as well as the Steam Controller we've heard so much about for months. Valve's website states that all of the above devices will be expected this year, even hinting at “new living room devices”, different than the Steam Machines we're already expecting. It's nice to see a business that has been so dedicated to fulfilling the needs of it's customers, finally pushing out some gaming hardware to match Steam gaming platform (we've been waiting over a year); and it's all about to hit the market at once. Steam lovers, hold onto your hats! Entertainment is about to get out of the bedroom, off that desk, and into the living room.
