Samsung Develops New Space Saving Module, ePoP

ePoPArticleI feel like I'm always complaining about smartphone batteries. I mean, they're supposed to be getting better, and if it were up to me, long battery life would be the number one spec to win my heart over, even if it wasn't the latest iPhone or Samsung device. Even worse is when a brand new beautiful handset comes out, has a slew of new bells and whistles, and still, a dumb battery. Plus, smartphones becoming slimmer and slimmer ultimately means a smaller battery, lessening improvement right? While manufacturers are slowly (but hopefully surely) coming up with some better components, there has been some major technological innovation worth talking about from Samsung. Soon, your ultra-slim phone will be able to sport the smallest battery all thanks to a new module called ePoP.

ePoP (embedded package-on-package) has been developed by Samsung, and is currently in mass production. According to Digit, it's a new type of memory originally designed for wearables. Using “dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) and NAND flash in one chip that could be stacked above an application processor, resulting in 40 percent less space utilization, allowing slimmer handset designs”. Specifically, the chip fuses 3GB of RAM with 32GB of storage, giving a transfer rate of 186Mbps, with a 64-bit bandwidth (NDTV Gadgets). Utilizing the conventional 225 square millimeters of space but only 1.4mm thin, the ePoP module leaves enough room inside the smartphone for an extra battery or other component of choice. Case in point- that extra 40 percent could be used for a larger battery, all while maintaining the sleekness of current smartphones.

ePoPArticle1Not to worry, Samsung never forgot about developing this single-package solution for wearables, and is still working on a similar option called “wearable memory'. As far as ePoP goes, we should be seeing the technology soon in Samsung flagships. Announcing this just a few weeks ahead of Samsung's Galaxy 6 release, which we already expect to be incredibly thin thanks to leaked pictures, surely makes us wonder if ePoP will be available sooner than later.
