Beautiful (and Indulgent) Take on Retro Gaming, the R-Kaid-R

R-Kaid-RWe'll never forget about arcades and arcade games, no matter how digital our lives become. Well, maybe the kids growing up in this era, where smartphones are handed to them as a toddler, will. One company, individual actually, by the name of Love Hulten, is trying to keep the retro game alive. A Swedish designer, Hulten has hand crafted a very unique portable arcade system called the R-Kaid-R, and somehow it looks vintage and sleek at the same time. Either way, the nostalgia is on point.

R-Kaid-R1R-Kaid-R might remind you of a variety of old video game consoles, like the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Super Nintendo, Atari 2600, and a handful of others; all of which it's hardware emulates and contains built-in support for. The device is a self-contained wooden arcade console, with an 8-way joystick that doubles as a lock to keep the box closed, and 10 buttons. It has a display that measures 800 x 600 pixels, a 16GB SD card containing a custom operating system and interface, a USB port for editing your game library, and a 5V rechargeable battery that runs up to 8 hours (TechnaBob).

R-Kaid-R2It also comes with a copy of Cave Story, a popular freeware platform-adventure PC game released back in 2004, contained on the 16GB SD card. It's expensive though, so let's just get that out of the way. Listed for $3,400 and ready to ship in September, let's think about the R-Kaid-R more as a beautiful creation, not some over-priced hipster gaming system. A lot of passion and technique went into building this thing, Hulten even claims it's meant to “breathe new life into a fading culture”. These days, we need a little revitalization to such a culture.
