InfiniFlash from SanDisk Hold up to 512TB at $1/GB


InfiniFlashSanDisk just announced InfiniFlash, a 512TB, all-flash storage platform intended for apps to hold high performance databases, streaming video, and other big data. The technology is being touted as an entirely new category in the market (The Inquirer). Three models are included in the series, the IF100, IF500, and IF700, all intended to fulfill the needs that the big data customers have; most importantly those who desire super high-density storage, like hundreds of petabytes.

InfiniFlash1The InfiniFlash system is configured with dual-power supplies, four fans; and, if you're wondering how it is capable of holding 512TBs, that is thanks to the row of up to 64 flash storage cards, each holding 8TBs. The entry-level IF100 hopes to fit in with OEMs and hyperscale customers with their own software platforms (it's just a box of flash, no computing) (An and Tech). The IF500 and IF700 are both software-hardware bundles. The IF500 is intended for scale-out storage, more suitable for big applications that require 2+ petabytes. It includes the IF100 and InfiniFlash OS ceph aboard. The IF700 is an IF100 that comes with InfiniFlash OS ION software, and works for higher performance block based apps (Computer World).

InfiniFlash2For about $1 per GB, you can get the IF100. Both the IF500 and IF700 devices are priced somewhere between $1 and $2 per GB. According to Computer World, prices are “based on the raw flash capacity. Deduplication or compression software will bring the cost per gigabyte down, although the additional processing will have an effect on performance”. The system is also upgradeable online, a “futureproofing” tactic, as SanDisk calls it. All three InfiniFlash models are available now.
