In between working on the “world’s thinnest tablet” and developing the world’s smallest 13-inch notebook, Dell has been busy adding some pretty sweet upgrades to their mid-range products as well. While the record-setting devices are nice, not everyone can afford them. So for the Average Joe who can’t shell out for the thinnest, most powerful or most rugged laptop on the market, but still wants the latest and greatest in display and performance, the affordable line of Dell Inspiron laptops might be the perfect fit.

On the higher end you have the Dell Inspiron 15 7000, a mid-range laptop powered by a fifth-generation dual-core Intel Core i7 processor and Intel HD Graphics. Standard features include 8GB of DDR3L RAM, a 1TB 5400RPM hard drive, Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11b/g/n/ac WiFi support – fairly basic stuff. As you probably could have guessed, there is an HDMI output, a pair of USB 3.0 ports and an SD card slot. Where things start to get really exciting, though, is in the new display option being offered for the Inspiron 15 7000. Dell has jumped aboard the 4K wagon and now offers a full 4K resolution (3,840x2,160) display for the 15.6-inch monitor on this laptop. The LED backlighting and in-plane switching (IPS) make for a panel that is vibrant and crystal clear no matter what angle you’re viewing from. And just to add to the cool factor, it’s a touchscreen display to boot. If you’re planning on using it to do any serious graphics work or gaming, there is even an option for an AMD Radeon R7 M20 GPU.

Dell also launched an Inspiron 15 5000 model this year, which foregoes the 4K display for some updated technology of its own. Most notably, the webcam is one of Intel’s RealSense 3D cameras. If you’re not yet familiar with this new addition to the world of smart camera technology, then you’re in for a real treat. The camera itself is actually capable of capturing depth information and thus can create 3D renderings of objects, as well as enable gesture control. In addition to simply being fascinating to watch, it definitely makes for an immersive and interactive experience. While the display won’t be quite as brilliant as the 4K model offers, there is a Full HD 1080p touchscreen option available which is more than sufficient for the needs of most users. The 5000 series ranges from a fifth-generation i3 with integrated graphics up to an i7 with an Nvidia GeForce 840M or AMD Radeon R7 M270. Not super powerful, but more than able to get the job done for the price range it’s in.

Overall both updated models are desirable options as far as reasonably affordable laptops go. Of course, it would be uber-cool if they could combine the 4K screen with the RealSense 3D camera into one super laptop, but – just like in life, you can’t always get what you want.
