LG Hints at an 8K Apple iMac Coming Later This Year

Apple8kDisplay1Uh oh… it looks like LG may have pre-emptively spilled the beans about Apple’s future plans for the iMac. Which is surprising, considering that Apple is notoriously hardcore when it comes to new model secrecy – if your company leaks a product, or starts boasting about producing components for a future iOS device, then you’ll be asked to pay a fine of no less than $50 million. Even for a major company like LG, who is one of Apple’s major display partners, this could spell trouble.

The rumors initially started circulating last week when LG gave a press release explaining why 4K is now passe. While discussing its own 98-inch 8K TV, the company wrote that “Apple has also announced that they will release the ‘iMac 8K’ with super-high resolution display later this year.” This information should obviously be taken with a grain of salt, especially considering that both Apple and LG have declined to comment on the rumors as of yet and LG has since removed the post altogether. However, a forthcoming 8K iMac is far from implausible.

Apple8kDisplayJust this past October, Apple launched their stunning 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K Display technology, which has a resolution of 5,120 x 2,880 pixels and far surpassed most of their competitors in pixel density. While it may initially seem improbable that the company would upgrade to a newer display so soon, recent advancements in display technology may pave the way for just that. VESA’s new DisplayPort 1.4a standard now allows for 7,680 x 4,320 8K displays, which comes out to an astounding 33-megapixels. An unconfirmed source from South Korea revealed that LG Display is already looking to significantly increase production of IGZO displays in anticipation of the imminent arrival of a bigger 12.9-inch iPad Pro and new iMac models.

Amidst so much speculation, there are a few things that we do know. First of all, Apple has already proven that it wants to offer the same “Retina” standard across devices, making display quality one of its hallmarks. One of the main reasons that the company values the privacy of upcoming products so much is because they have made a name for themselves as being innovators, and staying at the head of the pack when it comes to innovative technology. Second, LG is the manufacturer of record for Apple’s 5K iMac, so if anyone had an accurate insider scoop into what is coming next in that department it would be them. Regardless, we won’t know anything for sure until LG or Apple decides to confirm or deny the rumors.
