HP’s Omen Pro Laptop Is Super Thin and Built for Game Makers

HpOmenProGamers especially may recall last year’s Omen by HP, a super-thin gaming laptop that performed in much the same way as the Razer Blade did. It was a sweet little gaming machine packed into a svelte little frame that made gaming on-the-go a breeze. But it didn’t quite pack the horsepower needed by the folks that make these games. So to cover all their bases HP just announced their Omen Pro, a mobile workstation that contains the added horsepower needed to make it a suitable choice for gamers and developers alike.

From the outside, the Omen Pro appears to be nearly identical to its predecessor; it has the same super-thin, 0.78-inch thick body, 15.6-inch 1080p touchscreen, and weighs in at just under five pounds. Aesthetically, it is also covered in the same metallic black chassis as the original Omen and even carries over the extra-wide touchpad found in the gaming version. The only visual difference you may notice is that HP has added a touch of flair with red accents, such as red vents behind the back. Where you start to see the real upgrades come in is in the guts of this machine, which pack a surprising amount into such a thin package.

HpOmenPro1The Omen Pro makes the move to a 4th-generation Intel Core i7 processor and an NVIDIA Quadro K1100M graphics card. It also comes equipped with an HP Z Turbo Drive, which the company claims can double the performance of SATA solid state drives. Connectivity comes in the form of four USB 3.0 ports (a surprising amount for such a thin machine) as well as a mini-DisplayPort, HDMI, and of course a combo microphone/headphone jack. The Omen Pro runs Windows 7 Professional and continues to offer a Full HD 1080p touchscreen panel. The base model costs $2,199 and includes 8GB of DDR3-1600 RAM and 256GB of storage via HP’s Z Turbo PCI-E solid state drive, or you can spring for the $2,599 version which doubles the RAM to 16GB and the storage to 512GB. The price may initially make you balk if you’re considering investing in an Omen Pro, and HP gets that too. To add a little peace of mind, the Omen Pro comes with HP’s 3-year “3/3/3” warranty, which covers a 3-year parts warranty, 3-years labor warranty and 3 years of on-site service. Since most technology retailers offer only one year of coverage, this alone makes the Omen Pro worth considering.
