A Chaska, Minnesota-based company, called Sheer Wind, has scored a recent victory in the ongoing battle to eliminate our dependence on fossil fuels. The Invelox is a revolutionary new way to harvest wind power. The new design could bring the cost of wind power down enough to become competitive with coal or natural gas. According to SheerWind, the Invelox costs less than 1 cent per KWH (currently conventional wind power plants cost about 45 to 80 cents), requires no government subsidies to be profitable, reduces operating cost by 50% of current wind turbines, as well as minimizing environmental impact to bird populations. With these kind of figures renewable energy might just be on the verge of kicking fossil fuels to the curb.

The Invelox is such a simple design concept that it might have you asking why no one has thought of it before. Instead of collecting energy from high-speed winds pushing and passing through the giant blades of a rotor, it captures wind using wide-mouthed funnels. The wind is then directed through a tapered passage way that actually accelerates the wind flow. For example, if wind enters the funnels at 10 mph it will increase to 40 mph by the time it hits the turbine that drives the generator. Sheerwind claims that accelerating the air flow allows the turbine to work even at speeds as low as 2 mph. This is an obvious geographic advantage because areas that were previously considered to be unsuitable for wind farming can now be utilized.

Invelox’s clever design concept of bringing airflow from the top of the tower to ground level has several other advantages. It permits greater power generation with much smaller turbine blades, and in controlled tests SheerWind claims the new turbine produces 600% more electrical energy. Having the generator at ground level also allows for networking possibilities; providing the ability to direct energy from several turbines to one generator. Fewer generators combined with a unit that is 50% shorter and turbine blades that are 84% smaller result in less equipment, less maintenance, and therefore lowers the overall cost. One of the coolest things about the Invelox is that the design is scalable. This means the device is suitable for use in major wind farms or micro-generation settings. Its ability to produce power at much lower wind speeds gives it an overall wider range of applications.

Some of the claims might seem too good to be true, but currently SheerWind has built and tested a commercial-grade field demo and claims that testing has exceeded expectations. They are also in the process of custom building systems for a handful of clients and working towards the ultimate goal of mass production.

From all the rumored next-generation names we had heard so far, such as the 720, Durango or Infinity, the console is once-and-for-all called the Xbox One. The event today gave Microsoft a chance to finally address several other rumors about the hardware, including backwards compatibility, required constant connection to the internet and price. To no surprise, it also gave the company great opportunity to show off the console we have been anticipating since it’s predecessor in 2005.

The new hardware:
This was the essential component to show off in order to express the dynamics of the One. Code-named the Durango (maybe that’s why many thought it to be the console’s new name), the hardware is packed with 8GB of RAM, a 3.0 USB, an 8-core CPU, 500GB of Hard drive, Gigabit Ethernet, Direct WiFi, Blu-ray, an upgraded Kinect sensor said to be unbelievably accurate, and both an HDMI input and output for TV.

Speaking of television, with the use of mobile devices for gaming and web activity, console sales have recently been faint. However, because the One has new media-streaming and entertainment features, it is hoped to be seen as a “living room staple”. Not only can you scroll through a guide similar to a cable box, it also has a set of gesture controls for handling movies or browsers.

Onto the Rumors:

Rumor number One: The One will not be backwards compatible with 360 games, nor will your Xbox live games or any other 360 dependent content be. However, that Gamerscore you have been earning sure as heck will (phew)! As mentioned above, the complexity of the new hardware simply isn’t friendly with the past generation titles.

Rumor number Two: Second-hand sale of games will not be blocked. However, there will most likely be pre-owned game fees applied. What does this mean? According to Microsoft, the fee applies because users will be able to install a game from a disc onto their account that had been installed on a previous account. Additionally, once the disc is installed on the new account, it is not needed to insert the disc again.

Rumor number Three: Did the idea of the always-online component make you want to scream? Me too. Well, although you will need the ability to connect to the internet, the console will not always have to be hooked up to your internet connection. To my surprise, a Microsoft spokesperson even mentioned “We are also designing it so you can play games and watch Blu-ray movies and live TV if you lose your connection.” Hmmm, interesting.

The conversation of price did not make it to the stage today. Perhaps we will hear more about those specifics soon. After all, in about three weeks when E3 2013 hits, there will be plenty more to learn about the new Xbox One for you to make your own decision. Finally!

However, many folks have yet to upgrade to 4G, as smartphone users are still thriving well in the tech world over a 3G network. However, like a kid in a candy store, South Korean Samsung Electronics has excitedly announced their plans to one up the 4G technology by kicking 5G into high gear by 2020.

While seven years in technology seems like an eternity, the complex process of employing the standards in which 5G can be made possible takes time. Samsung claims mobile systems will be able to transmit data hundreds of times faster than current 4G networks. According to Samsung, they have developed “the world’s first adaptive array transceiver”, using 64 antenna elements, capable of transmitting data at speeds more than 1,000 Mbps per second and up to 2 kilometers in distance. However, researchers were quick to express their reservations regarding the 5G ‘breakthrough’.

Shahram Niri, director of the 5G Innovation Centre at Centre for Communications Systems Research (CCSR), recently addressed the concept that there has been no standard for 5G agreed upon. Although technology is being improved vastly in many areas, there are more elements concerned than what Samsung’s claim has touched on, which has merely addressed capabilities relating to antenna’s ability to attain a higher data rate.

Other areas required to build this standard have been addressed by CCSR, such as the “method of encoding data in the radio carrier wave and the frequencies to be used”, Niri stated. The race for innovative leadership in mobile communications is fierce; a competition that will only continue to rapidly increase. Samsung is not the only party onboard. The European Union has a mirrored project underway in efforts to help the continent regain the mobile lead. With 50 million euros invested, they plan to deliver the technology by 2020 as well. However, as Samsung stated to the Wall Street Journal, their efforts “will trigger the creation of international alliances and the timely commercialization of related mobile broadband services”.

Along with the entire ecosystem required to achieve the 5G era, another reason to hold-your-horses, excitement wise, is that with great power comes great responsibilities. In this case, the reference refers to higher speeds creating overcrowded connections. Although it undeniably goes without saying, Matt Peckham from Time Magazine stated “The faster you make mobile communication technology, the more likely people are to use it and the more likely the network’s going to choke”. Not only that, but as long as we continue to have data thresholds in our contracts, the larger the data transmission could create financial penalties, and quickly.

Despite Samsung’s exciting announcement, all of it’s glory might have been a bit glorified. The connectivity they are trying to reach is fearless, but they sure as heck aren’t the only group in the ballgame. In addition, the drawbacks of tower congestion, data plan charges, and larger data streaming in general could come back to bother us. Sometimes it doesn’t matter how fast the car goes if you don’t have a straight away.

This past week Samsung announced their plans to bring the incredible 5G speed to wireless. Now, seven years in the making sounds like a long time for technology, but there is an entire ecosystem involved in making such a standard possible. Samsung claims that their standard will be one hundred times faster than 4G, with such speeds able to download a 2 hour movie in one second. With the help of super high frequency bands and data transmitting tens of gigabits per second, this could become possible. For more information on the Samsung 5G plan, check out my article in our Tech Blog!

Heard of Windows Blue, Windows 8, or Windows Windows Windows? Haha just kidding. Well, Microsoft has allegedly dropped the Blue codename, and is now naming the new software Windows 8.1. Since 8 has been released, some users have scrutinized Microsoft for changing the look of the desktop as well as the manner in which the start menu pops up. It isn’t as palatable for many, and they are wishing it were more like Windows 7. However, whether or not Microsoft is going to comply with the complaints is unknown.

The new HTC Facebook Smartphone a flop? So far AT&T will not admit to discontinuing the phone, but it seems that it is pretty much the upcoming plan. What else are you supposed to do when sales on your device are so terrible that even when dropping the price to an incredible .99 cents last week did next to nothing for your company’s sales? The biggest issue with the phone is in the name. As a Facebook focused device, it floods you with Facebook photos and updates upon unlocking. It is known that any smart device can download the Facebook app, so it is no surprise to me that not many folks walked into an AT&T store wanting this one.

Amazon has announced their new Virtual Coin Currency, Amazon Coins! They are available to purchase apps and games at the Amazon app store! The coins have a bit of a benefit, they can be purchased for up to a 10 percent discount. For example, 500 coins will cost you $4.80, so you save 20 cents. Obviously, the more you purchase at a time the larger the discount. Amazon is hoping that the coins will do two things: make it easier for consumers to buy their games and apps by avoiding multiple transactions, as well as providing new opportunities for the developers of these apps and games.

Finally, the Occulus Rift is a gaming head-set that I read about over a month ago. It has hit the news this week because of it’s incredibly radical way of altering a gamers’ experience! Other head-mounted displays out there cost a fortune, some over a hundred thousand dollars. Not the Rift, and the designer of the Rift has been sought out by countless game CEOS and designers who were quickly convinced it could drastically change the horror gaming field. At 110 degrees, the headset encompasses the user’s entire field of view, where you are seeing only the gaming world and nothing else. It makes first-person gaming more horrific, more exciting and undoubtedly entirely real. I would do anything to try this out, would you? Thanks for reading and watching internet!!! <3, Red-Headed Geek.
